Ghent's canals are more than just a river crossing the historic center. They are recognition marks carved into the urban landscape. They have a rich history, bringing goods into the city, and allowing the inhabitants to export their handcraft to the world. Textiles were shipped from the center, and foreign products were transported right into the center.

Ghent's canals and rivers
look and feel:
Great views from the water
extra information:
A boat trip gives you a different perspective on the city. The multilingual guides have a great way to summarize centuries of history and to involve the passengers on their trips. An evening walk along the canals is another option. After rush hour Ghent is a very quiet city to walk through. And a lively place once you enter one of the dozens of pubs. The canals are planned to be modified so in the future you can tour the City by boat. Until now it wasn't possible to do a complete loop.
about the neighbourhood:
Follow the wooden structures along the canals to discover interesting corners. Beware of places where the infrastructure didn't stand the test of time.
