The Friday market is the unofficial Market Place in Ghent. If you're not European, that's what every European citizen relates to as the central place in his city. Mostly because of traditions. Here, the Vrijdagsmarkt has all the aspects of a central place. Dozens of restaurants and pubs, a monument right in the middle of the square, a central position in the city center, and markets on Fridays and weekend days that attract hundreds of people on normal days and thousands on sunny days.

Although Graslei is the more "prestige" central place in the city, with its fancy restaurants, hotels and historic architecture, Friday Market is the hangaround place for beers, lunches and light dinners, public markets and all kinds of social activities. The public market on Friday has fresh vegetables, imported fish from the nearby Dutch coastal villages, authentic Belgian products (cheese, meat products) and the inevitable useful kitchen appliances.
